Firestone requests probe of Explorer
Article Abstract:
Bridgestone/Firestone Inc on May 31, 2001 asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to investigate Ford Motor Co's Explorer sport-utility vehicle (SUV) for 'defective design.' In a letter to NHTSA, the tiremaker charged that the Ford Explorer is 50% harder to control than other SUVs when a tire failure happens. Bridgestone/Firestone based its allegation on a report by Dennis Guenther, a mechanical engineering professor at Ohio State University. In comparing the Explorer with the Jeep Cherokee and Chevrolet Blazer, Guenther reported that the Explorer has an oversteer problem.

Ford analysis puts more blame on Firestone tires
Article Abstract:
Ford Motor Co has released an analysis showing that a key layer was smaller in tires prone to tread separation, in its continuing attack against Firestone tires. Ford also claimed that the wedge size varied among Bridgestone/Firestone plants. Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone have been increasingly aggressive in blaming each other's products for accidents that occurred after the tread separated on Firestone tires on Ford Explorers and the sport utility vehicles sometimes rolled over.
