Funds might have to be clearer on fees
Article Abstract:
The SEC is proposing a new rule that would require mutual funds to disclose truthfully the fees they charge investors. Currently, the prospectuses provided by mutual funds merely outline what percentage of the fund's assets goes towards management and administrative costs. These prospectuses often use an example that show the impact of these fees on a $10,000 investment using a hypothetical 5% return, which critics say understates the actual fees paid by investors. The proposed SEC rule would would require mutual funds to use past investment returns in the example.
