Investors with portfolios composed largely of the same type of stocks, such as growth funds, ought to create broader, more diversified portfolios that can withstand the many shifts which occur in the stock market. An example of an ideal investment portfolio for non-retirement purposes is one that has a mix of large and mid-sized company growth funds or international companies of all sizes, as well as two-year treasury notes. Mixing bonds as well as real estate and value funds with technology stocks will make a portfolio less vulnerable to market volatilities.

Net funds stumble at start

WWW Internet Fund, an Internet mutual fund established in Aug 1996 by Lawrence York and Jim Greene, secured only approximately $30 million out of the over $2.3 billion that investors have placed into Internet funds, barely sufficient to cover expenses. WWW Internet Fund, which does not collect sales commission, boasts of a portfolio that includes several blue-chip firms and shares in several start-up firms that have no track records or with little or no earnings.

Fund manager stays bullish on tech stocks' outlook

Amerindo Investment Advisors' fund manager Alberto Vilar is convinced that the technology stocks in his portfolio will recover. However, financial writers point out that his fund has fallen more than 81% from Feb 2000-Feb 2001. Yet, Vilar continues to donate large amount of money to charity while predicting a technology stock recovery. He forecasts that a new generation of technology firms are poised to soar in the next five years.
