E-commerce losses drive dot-com insurance

Hundreds of dot-com or Internet startup companies and Fortune 500 corporations with Internet sites are taking out insurance to protect themselves from potential electronic commerce losses resulting from computer crashes and hacker attacks. These online insurance policies include those which guard against loss of revenues, stolen trade secrets and business data, loss of reputation and electronic publishing liability.

It might take years for online exchanges to realize the promise of leading industries into the Internet age. The idea of moving companies' supply- chain operations onto the Internet to buy and sell goods and trade market information is simple enough. However, all are still in their planning stages with launches that are expected to push through further into the future. As it is, only a few exchanges are already running, which includes Chemdex.

Hewlett-Packard offers Internet classroom services

Hewlett-Packard Co will begin offering E-Learning-on-Tap, a virtual learning service that provides online workshops to corporate employees and students. The web conferencing technology from PlaceWare of Mountain View, CA, is used by Hewlett-Packard to set up virtual classrooms. The company will also offers technical support, training for instructors, course content, telephone lines and other products and services.
