NHL owners and players finally came to terms on a collective bargaining agreement on Jan 11, 1995, which makes possible a 48-game hockey season. Although the owners did not get the salary cap they sought, they won concessions in other areas, such as free agency and arbitration.

The National Hockey League will open its 1995-96 season in Oct 1995. This season promises to be a lucrative one. The previous year's labor dispute has been solved and Fox Broadcasting signed a five-year television deal. The sport is gaining popularity in the US.

The Canadian team defeated Sweden to win the World Junior Hockey Championships held in Boston, MA, in Jan 1996. Wayne Gretzky, who is an alumnus of the Junior leagues, congratulated the team. The US team finished a disappointing fifth.
