In Silicon Valley, loyalty means paying a high price; cultural strengths help offset loss of paper wealth
Article Abstract:
Calico Commerce, like many public high tech companies, faces losing employees as stock option values decline. To counter this, the company has set up a management style of openess, which, with other office perks, it hopes will compensate employees in ways besides money. So far, in a tight labor market for computer programming skills, the company is relatively intact. Calico's share prices are under $20, a return to October 1999 levels, after peaking at more than $60 in early December. At the same time, the company's 'paper millionaire' count rose to 100, then dropped to 20.
