Progressive Conservative leader Jean Charest, 38, is easily the most promising party leader in the nation, yet his future is very uncertain. His background resembles his mentor, Brian Mulroney, but Charest is much more personable. However, he may be too non-ideological to advance further.

Canada remains as deeply divided in 1996 as it has been throughout history. Residents of Alberta and British Columbia believe the rest of the country exploits them, Quebec sovereigntists have a limited view of English Canadians, and Central Canadians disregard the West.
