New microchip design is introduced by Intel
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp. has introduced a new line of microprocessor chips under the name Itanium. At an investment cost of one billion dollars, Intel has designed a chip that can handle larger chunks of data and is enhanced by its ability to parallel-process, or work on several areas of a problem at the same time. Software companies Microsoft and SAS Institute have designed products to support the new chip. Several computer companies, including SGI, Dell, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Unisys, plan to introduce computer hardware which incorporates the new line of microprocessors.
