An investigation found that thousands of Australians have suffered serious effects, including a number of deaths associated with the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and other depressants. Australia and the US are evaluating the evidence but have placed strict caveats on the use of SSRI by children and adolescents in the interim.

A debate regarding RU 486, an abortion pill for emergency contraception is presented. In 1994, Australian doctors began trials of RU 486 as an abortion drug as well as a morning-after pill however the trials were suspended after intervention by the then health minister Carmen Lawrence, following concerns about inadequate patient consent.
