Charest has emerged as one of the leading opponents of the Oct 30, 1995, referendum on Quebec independence. He has waged an eloquent campaign citing the reasons why Quebec should continue its ties with Canada. Other federalists have failed to illuminate the issues as superbly as Charest.

Separatist leader Lucien Bouchard has the delusional belief that Canadians outside Quebec will readily accept an independent Quebec. Instead of focusing on the negative aspects of separatism, federalists should appeal to the French and English values of togetherness.
