Asia: many don't like software dominance

Any changes that can weaken software giant Microsoft Corp's ability to launch products could affect more than just stock values in Asia, where Microsoft dominates the software sector as it does in the US. Merrill Lynch Hong Kong analyst Matei Mihalca noted that Microsoft's market control does not sit well with Asian software businesses, which are generally keen on manipulating their own technology destiny. For example, China has been actively working to develop a locally made operating system that would challenge Microsoft's Windows NT.

Japan pioneers brave new world of wireless

A Japanese trend that has the potential to become global is the integration of the Internet with mobile devices, such as cellular telephones. Japanese wireless giant NTT DoCoMo is probably the most successful company in the world to have ventured in the market for Internet access via a cellular telephone. Its i-mode service has attracted 7.8 million subscribers in just 16 months since it was launched in 1999.

Little Linux makes gains vs. giant Microsoft

Linux is perhaps the only non-Microsoft operating system that is gaining market share in company computer networks. With about 7 million users, Linux is now used by more than 14% of companies, Datapro Information Services says. Tuesday, Linux got another boost when software giant Oracle - saying that the world needs an alternative to Windows NT - announced alliances with 4 Linux-related companies. Software makers Oracle, Netscape and IBM have announced plans to their products work with Linux. And a small band of companies, including Red Hat Software, are selling low-cost versions that are easier to use and offer more applications and customer support.
