Living on skid row
Article Abstract:
Homelessness in the US dates back to the 19th century when Civil War veterans moved from area to area in search of work. The Depression of the 1930s, however, was witness to the widespread existence of the phenomenon. The temporary abodes of these unfortunate individuals have come to be known as skid rows named after a road in Seattle, WA, which used to be the venue for skidding logs chopped from the forest enroute to mills. The term became a synonym for humiliation.

The issues
Article Abstract:
Facilities for the homeless have sprouted all the US. However, many of them have been choosy about their clients. There are several issues involved that need apt answers. Among the more important ones are the increase or decrease in the number of homeless individuals, the effect of cheaper housing on the drive against homelessness, the selectivity about aid to the homeless and the attitude of the typical American toward the problem.

Crisis in the 1980s
Article Abstract:
The 1980s saw homelessness become a common occurrence in US society. The recession and decreased public spending were partly to blame for this development. Furthemore, mental hospitals became stricter in their admissions and stay duration rules. These mental institutions at times released patients to their communities without the benefit of aftercare services. Likewise, the courts decriminalized public drunkenness.
