The Association of National Advertisers opened its 2000 meeting in Dana Point, California which was graced by demonstrations from the striking Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, which flew banners behind planes calling for a boycott of Procter & Gamble's products. Otherwise, ad agency chiefs and corporate titans spoke and conferees partied on the beach as Frankie Avalon sang.

Despite the dot-com shakeout, ad agencies remain confident 2001 will be a good year. Large international shops have seen no decline in ad budgets among their big corporate clients. In other news, True North is acquiring Montemayor Asociados, San Antonio, with billings of about $20 mil. Interpublic is buying Deutsch in a stock deal worth $150 mil to $250 mil.

As the economy slows, some expect the role of search consultants to grow in the ad industry. Search consultants help advertisers and agencies find one another and maintain good agency-client relations. MatchWorks is a new search consultant. Another such firm is AAR Partners in New York, which has an alliance with Aprais, a worldwide consulting firm based in London.
