Article Abstract:
Traditional communications companies have realized the extensive market reach of Internet gateways and are acquiring significant stakes in them. Internet gateways provide directories and search engines that help users locate Web sites. Among the major communications companies buying shares in the Internet gateways are Walt Disney, NBC and, possibly, CBS. Disney has agreed to acquire a 43% stake in Infosee, which attracts 13 million visitors, in a deal worth $473 million. NBC had earlier committed to buy a $32 million stake in Snap, a new service with about 2 million visitors. CBS is said to be negotiating with search engine Lycos, which has 11 million visitors.
