More hurdles for EchoStar-DirecTV plan
Article Abstract:
Even before the merger of EchoStar Communications and DirecTV, the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that the companies would have to broadcast hundreds more local channels. And the House Judiciary chairman, James F. Sensenbrenner told EchoStar chairman Charles Ergen of his fears for a monopoly in rural areas that are not served by cable, where they would have to pay the merged company for television services. Ergen promised a universal pricing plan. DirecTV and EchoStar reach 78 local broadcast markets now out of 210 in the U.S. Both companies are racing to comply with a Jan. 1 deadline spending hundreds of millions of dollars to increase channel capacity.

EchoStar bid for Hughes could hinge on antitrust
Article Abstract:
Allowing the number one and number two satellite television operators to merge is thought to be about a 50% likelihood from a regulatory standpoint. Nevertheless, EchoStar has offered about $30 billion for Hughes Electronics and its DirecTV business, a much better offer, financially, than the one News Corporation made. It is an all stock offer, and that might be negotiated 'under the right conditions.'
