Travel industry gears up to go wireless

Hotels and airlines are planning to offer online reservations via personal digital assistants and cellular phones by Apr 2000. The move by the travel industry is aimed at taking advantage of the increasing number of travelers that are using wireless hand-held computers equipped with Web browsers, a population that is expected to number by about 23 million by 2003. The move will entail setting up simplified Web sites that are linked to wireless systems.

More travelers staying plugged in without the plug

Internet service providers are paying establishments frequented by business travlers, such as hotels and airports, to allow them to install wireless Internet access. With wireless technology, travelers can surf the Internet or send e-mail without connecting their laptops to a telephone line. Travelers who intend to use wireless Internet access must buy a wireless Ethernet card and subscribe to a wireless Internet provider.
