More women diversify ranks of fund industry
Article Abstract:
The US mutual fund industry, once dominated by powerful, wealthy men, has slowly changed to include women. The intensified cmpeition for talent and more tolerant attitudes among younger male managers have helped breakdown barriers that kept women out of the executive suites. Most of the top spots at the largest fund groups in the US are still occupied by white men, and only a handful of women and minorities serve on fund company boards. Real change cannot be fully expected until women and minorities permeate all layers of management.

After tough year, some closed funds open to new investors
Article Abstract:
Mutual funds that used to be closed to investors have opened up to new investors. The strategy is aimed at fattening portfolios battered by the bearish stock market of 2000. Among the funds that are reopening are Firsthand Technology Innovators fund, Fremont US Micro-Cap and Fidelity Contrafund and Fidelity Growth and Income. Investors should approach reopened funds cautiously, however, since many funds wait too long to close which result in bloated assets even after they stop accepting new cash.

Investors go for funds that trade like stocks
Article Abstract:
Exchange-traded funds (ETFs) are becoming increasingly popular among investors because they carry the features of both stocks and mutual funds. They appear to be traditional index funds but are traded like stocks for they can be bought or sold at market price. In addition, ETFs have lower annual management fees than traditional mutual funds and are easier to track in real time.
