OSC widens market-timing probe

The Ontario Securities Commission has broadened its crackdown on questionable market-timing practices in the mutual fund industry by targeting Franklin Templeton Investments Corp. for potential enforcement action. This was among a series of developments that included settlements with three fund companies caught up in the regulatory probe, and criticism of Canada's top securities regulator for not imposing fines against them.

Four partners of Deloitte and Touche LLP charged with professional misconduct by the accounting profession's governing body have gone on the offensive and asked the courts to wind up the case. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) released its charges against the four partners in connection with the audit of the live theatre company's 1997 financial statements.
