Offshore Jobs In Technology: Opportunity Or a Threat?
Article Abstract:
The constant move of US jobs overseas in technology industries reflects both a concern for disappearing jobs in the US and the reward of more cost-effective globalization for US companies that use less expensive overseas labor . Forrester Research has predicted that 3.3 million service jobs will move overseas between 2000 and 2015. What is not clear is the total economic and social benefit to US companies. Lehman Brothers and Dell Computer are returning jobs to the US because of the ineffectiveness of foreign workers in computer services and technical support. Actual cost savings may be misleading because of the importance of communication and cultural c onsistency in project development that make companies use higher-priced but more reliable expertise based in the US.
