At a crossroad, PeopleSoft bets on the future of Internet-based software

PeopleSoft is set to preview the latest version of its 'enterprise' software, PeopleSoft 8, a program that lets companies automate many business management tasks. The release comes long after those of competitors and market share leaders Oracle and SAP of Germany, and PeopleSoft shares are down 30 percent since January. PeopleSoft spent 27 percent of its 1999 budget on research and development, making sure its software is the most entirely Internet-based, hoping thereby to gain an edge over its competition.

Microsoft to pay $20 million to settle lawsuit over Java
Article Abstract:
After a 4-year battle, Microsoft will pay Sun Microsystems $20 million. Microsoft, which had a license for Java, shipped the programming language with the capacity to be only run on Windows. Sun designed the program to be run on all systems. Microsoft can use Java for 7 years, except Sun's new version. Microsoft chairman Steve Ballmer and Sun chairman Scott McNealy have been trading barbs for years and may continue to do so into the future.
