Petrocan unveils big oil projects

Petro-Canada (Petrocan) has launched plans for northern Alberta oil sands projects over the next 10 years, worth up to $6 billion. There are two major projects. One will develop an "in-situ" (underground) oil sands facility at Meadow Creek, and the other will convert the firm's existing refinery in Edmonton to accept bitumen.

Calgary, Alb.-based Petro-Canada Inc. is conducting negotiations with Alergian government officials over the development of natural gas fields in southern Algeria. Petro-Canada is in talks with Algeria's Sonatrach.

Petro-Canada said that it could seek compensation if the energy regulator of Alberta, Canada reverses its decision to close natural gas wells. These wells would threaten oil sand production.
