Article Abstract:

The Jabiluka project, a proposed uranium mine on Aboriginal land, is being targeted by Australia's environmentalists. Former Senator Jo Vallentine along with 117 other protestors were arrested at the Jabiluka Uranium Mine. They argue that 67% of Australian people support ending this project. On Jul 14, 1998, more than 200 activists swarmed into the site and attached themselves to mining machines to delay the project for as long as possible.

Legal loopholes free Jabiluka protesters

Article Abstract:

Some protesters who were arrested at Australia's Jabiluka uranium mine, in the Northern Territory's Kakadu National Park, have been charged guilty of crime because they were unable to make a court appearance in Darwin. The law mandates that those who do not appear in court to answer charges shall be declared guilty. Many of the protesters were unable to pay for the journey. Others who did appear in court had the charges dismissed.

Australia's Kakadu National Park is the site of archaeological remnants and rock art from prehistoric times. It is the focus of modern disputes over uranium mining and aboriginal land rights. Traditional owners were forced to turn over their land to the government when the park was created in the 1970s, and uranium mining on the park's borders has been a constant political issue.
