Anonymizer.com, Hush Communications, Zero-Knowledge, PrivacyX and Network Associates, ZipLip.com are selling software and services that allow users to surf the Web and send email securely and anonymously. As more consumers use the Web for everyday business and financial transactions, encryption is moving into the marketplace, backed by investors and business people who see another avenue to Internet profits. These businesses seek to support themselves either by subscription or advertising. Users typically sign up to protect themselves from intrusive Web marketing research, interception of sensitive email, or theft of private information.

The research team at AT&T Labs in Florham Park, New Jersey, is working on a suite of voice technology products for voice-automation companies. It is a database of sounds from "a" to "zh" so that synthetic speech will sound more normal. The basis for the new product came with help from a Japanese company, ATR, saving AT&T Labs many years of research and work. Replicating a human voice used to take a year; now it takes a month after a person spends 10-40 hours in a recording studio.
