Spending on drugs up, data say
Article Abstract:
Canadians spent about Can$11.4 bil on prescriptions and Can$3.3 bil on over-the-counter drugs in 2000, up from Can$2.6 bil and Can$1.2 bil, respectively, in 1985, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information. Some 69% of drug costs are paid for by out-of-pocket or by private insurers. About Can$1 bil worth of drugs are received by those receiving medically necessary hospital care, and these are the only costs guaranteed to be covered by healthcare. According to the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, a national pharmacare plan would cost about Can$3.2 bil/yr, but would lower overall drug costs by Can$650 mil/yr. During 2000, drug spending was Can$478 per capita, and of the Can$95 bil spent on healthcare last year, 15.5% was for drugs. A pie chart shows the distribution of health expenditures during 1998 in Canada.
