'US Weekly' runs into slow-sales problems

Questions about the viability of US Weekly magazine in the realm of entertainment news have been raised in the wake of reports that its publisher told ad agencies that the periodical would not be able to maintain its 1-million-a-week guaranteed circulation. US Weekly's guaranteed circulation figure has been adjusted to 800,000. The magazine is also reportedly testing cover prices charges both lower and higher than its existing $2.99 cover charge.

New magazines feed off ad revenue gains

The increase in advertising revenues has led to rise in the number of magazines that are showing up on newstands and in mailboxes in 1998. According to the Publishers Information Bureau, magazine ad revenues reached $1.34 billion through September 1998. This represented a 9.3% increase compared to the same period in 1997. The increased revenues are giving publishers' confidence in future ventures.
