No margin for error at many older airports
Article Abstract:
Aircraft accident investigators, pilots and regulators are confronted with the issue of how to effectively address maximum safety protection requirements at many old airports across the US. The runways at airports such as Burbank Airport, CA; Midway Airport, IL and La Guardia Airport are considerably shorter than those typically used by large jets although they are within standards. Furthermore, some of these airports do not have 1,000-ft safety runoff areas at the ends of their runways.

25 airports to get new runway safety radar
Article Abstract:
The FAA announced that a new radar system will be installed at 25 midsize airports. The new system is intended to prevent runway collisions. Radar systems that monitor traffic on runways and taxiways have already been installed by the FAA. These systems, however, do not provide warnings to air traffic controllers when a collision is about to occur. The FAA intends to award a contract for the conflict-alert system called ASDE-X.
