Prime Minister John Howard and Treasurer Peter Costello must present the radical changes of the Australian tax reform package in a reassuring manner to improve Howard's chances for reelection. The Asian economic crisis has created a climate where caution is in order. Howard faces opposition from Labor and Pauline Hanson's One Nation Party. Labor advocates caution. The One Nation Party wishes to return to an idealized Australian past.

However, this setback has been overstated and will not change election plans.
