The Team Canada trade mission returned from negotiations with India, Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia with $8.7 billion in trade deals, which far exceeded the $2 billion that federal officials had expected. Other issues Prime Minister Jean Chretien and the premiers discussed during the trip are reviewed.

Since 1991, Canada has co-sponsored a UN resolution expressing 'concern' over China's human rights record, but in 1997, Canada withdrew its support for the resolution, as did France and other European countries. Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy did get China to agree to some concessions.

Prime minister Jean Chretien, the premiers of seven provinces, and a group of 300 Canadian business executives began their Jan 1996 tour of Asia with a visit with high-level representatives in India. Team Canada secured well over $3 billion worth of trade deals with Indian corporations.
