Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien began a trade mission to Asia on Jan 8, 1997. The mission is being touted as a means to reduce unemployment through expanded exports. However, issues such as layoffs, consumer demand and corporate power have not been adequately addressed.

Interprovincial imports have dropped slightly in seven of the Canadian provinces, costing Canada about $7 billion annually. All levels of Canadian government should give as much priority to increasing interprovincial trade as they do international trade.
