Tobacco sponsorships to end
Article Abstract:
Tobacco-company sponsorship of sports and cultural events will be banned by the Canadian federal government, but the government will also provide transition time of five years for the events to find other financial support. The first two years will see no limitations, but eventually curbs will be applied to lead to a total ban. The ban is called for when the Tobacco Act was passed in 1997, but events organizers pleaded for more time for them to obtain replacement funds. The tobacco issue especially made a major impact in Quebec, Canada, where many tobacco-sponsored events are held and where many tobacco firms are based.
