IBM boasts of better, faster chip

IBM has announced a breakthrough in superior chip technology that involves the use of soft, plastic-like material that provides better insulation for copper wiring than existing glass-based materials. The manufacturing breakthrough will enable laptop batteries to last longer while hand-held computers, Web-based cell phones and set-top TV boxes will become more powerful and faster. IBM's goal is to begin mass production using the new technology and material within 2000.

Transmeta finally shows Crusoe chip in action
Article Abstract:
Transmeta Corp introduced the Crusoe, its so-called supercomputer chip at the recent PC Expo in New York. Use of the Crusoe chips were exhibited in an IBM ThinkPad 240 laptop, an ultralight NEC laptop, a very small computer motherboard and a superslim Hitachi notebook. Transmeta executives claim that the Crusoe chips provide 50% to 100% longer batter life to notebook computers and Internet equipment.

CEO boasts Big Blue won't overshadow Sun

Sun Microsystems Inc CEO Scott McNeally has disclosed that he is not threatened by International Business Machines' (IBM) growing share of the Unix server market. He believes that Sun will remain the dominant Unix vendor for he says that IBM's server is considered a 'dinosaur' in the Internet age. By the end of 2000, Sun still reigns over the $60 billion worldwide market for Unix servers, the dominant hardware on the Internet, with a 40% share.
