U.S. IS SPEEDING UP PLAN FOR CREATING A NEW IRAQI ARMY
Article Abstract:
The US has announced a change in its schedule for a new, revitalized Iraqi army. Walter B. Slocombe, who heads the efforts to develop security institutions, indicated that the US wants to create three divisions with 27 battalions in the next 12 months. It hopes to field 40,000 Iraqi troops with former midlevel officers involved in training new recruits. Because the US faces greater obstacles in getting other countries to provide troops for security and funds for reconstruction, it needs to develop an Iraqi force to offset criticism of its failure to let the Iraqis run their own country.

U.S. CONSIDERING RECALLING UNITS OF OLD IRAQ ARMY
Article Abstract:
L. Paul Bremer, the US administrator in Baghdad, is under pressure to reconsider his May 2003 decision to disband members of the Iraqi Army. Pentagon officers believe that recruiting them would help build a local military force and stabilize the country. Bremer's predecessor, Jay Garner, had advocated keeping military units together and using Iraqi soldiers to assist in redevelopment projects so that they would feel important to the nation's recovery.
