With a nod to history, Rieth barges ahead
Article Abstract:
Peter Reith's electorate of Flingers owes its place in history to Stanley Melbourne Bruce. Bruce was the only incumbent Australian prime minister to lose his seat in 1929 because he had declared war on union. Reith's negotiations with Charyl Kernot, Australian Democrats' leader, produced a deal allowing the Coalition's proposed industrial relations changes through the Senate. These changes gave him the opportunity to break the Maritime Union of Australia's monopoly on the waterfront.

Many politicians have consequently abandoned their rhetoric about economic rationalism. This was evidenced in Jan 1998, when the One Nation Party won the state Senate seat of Whitsunday.
