With plot still sketchy, characters vie for roles; the struggles over e-books abound, though readership remains elusive
Article Abstract:
Publishers, authors, bookstores, Web sites, computer makers, and software makers are all jockeying for position in the race to dominate the electronic book market. The current business model posits the consumer visiting a Web site to fill up the the memory of their portable text-display device with the latest bestseller. The current reality is that most consumers seem content with their 'paper-based content' purchased at the mall or online. But forces in the publishing world are slavering over the e-books' potential to eliminate commodity (paper), inventory, and distribution problems, and thereby increase their margins. At the same time, these companies eyeing the market don't want to open themselves to the same marketing and licensing debacle that the recording industry experienced with Napster.
