The role of neuropeptide Y in cardiovascular regulation
Article Abstract:
Neuropeptide Y (NPY) depolarizes the arterioles and enhances Ca2+ influx through voltage-dependent channels resulting in direct vasoconstriction of blood vessels. NPY also stimulates vasoactive compounds and electrical nerve endings thereby initiating secondary indirect vasoconstriction of the arterial blood vessels. Additionally, NPY inhibits the release of renin which is secreted in response to various stimuli. The physiological effects of the peptide is indicative of its applicability as a new cardiovascular agent.

Recent developments with neuropeptide Y receptor antagonists
Article Abstract:
Neuropeptide Y (NPY) exerts its cardiovascular effects via NPY receptor antagonists. In a study of vasoconstriction in anesthetized pigs, the application of nonpeptide, selective Y1 receptor antagonists BIBP3226 and BIBP3435 on vascular smooth muscle in vivo antagonized Y1 receptors, inhibited sympathetic neurotransmitter release and resulted in muscle smooth muscle contraction evoked by sympathetic nerve stimulation. These results indicate that exogenous agonists mediate vasoconstrictor response to nerve stimulation.

Neuropeptide Y feeding receptors: are multiple subtypes involved?
Article Abstract:
The influence of neuropeptide Y (NPY) on the induction of eating in vertebrate species has been studied. NPY is a linear 36-amino-acid peptide that was first isolated from the brain of pigs. Recent available data suggest that the receptors Y1 or Y5 or both may be appetite receptors. The former has specific antagonists with potent anorectic effects which imply Y1's involvement in appetite regulation. The latter has been identified as the receptor with pharmacological properties similar to a proposed appetite receptor.
