A web of influence
Article Abstract:
Both companies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) increasingly use the Internet as a public relations tool in their disputes over social, environmental and human rights issues. The NGOs have so far proven more adept in promoting their causes, disseminating information and mobilizing opinion over the Internet, but corporations are also learning to use the medium effectively. These efforts by NGOs produce better informed consumers who are more critical of corporate actions. This shift in consumer attitudes has persuaded some companies, at least, to become more responsive and socially responsible.

New directions in Pakistan's foreign policy
Article Abstract:
Pakistani foreign policy is in transition with the end of the Cold War. Pakistani policy is directed by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff, General Asif Nawaz Janjua. This troika must repair relations with the US, damaged by Pakistan's nuclear weapons program and by the decline in Pakistan's value as a Cold War buffer zone. Regionally, Pakistan is seeking closer ties with Iran and Turkey as part of a strategy of protection against India, and may prove to be instrumental in reaching an Afghan peace.

China and Japan: Demonstrating differences
Article Abstract:
China is becoming harder to govern and the ruling Communist Party seeks to boost its legitimacy by emphasizing its nationalist credentials including through its own history textbooks, rather than its now-redundant ideology. In a country of China's size the actual number of protestors was relatively small, but their anger was genuine and widely shared and moreover the issue gave an outlet for dissent in a country where overt political activity is closely monitored.
