Constraints & opportunities in the Arab world
Article Abstract:
Arab regimes face a major challenge of legitimacy in the midst of the economic crisis that has beset the region, and liberalization was perceived to be an effective solution to the problem. However, this will not ensure democratic progress as Islamic culture supports the concept of authoritarianism. Democratization of Arab states is perceived to raise socioeconomic issues on wealth distribution that could result in class conflicts.
