Article Abstract:
The US remained on top of the UN Register of Conventional Arms list as of Sep 2, 1997. A total of 4,759 transfers of various military ammunitions and battle gear exports were registered in the US, 1,502 of which went to Israel. Majority of the importing states from the Middle East did not join the survey. They demanded for the expansion of the survey items to include weapons of mass destruction. Weapons importation and exportation in 1997 exceeded 1996, 1995 and 1994 statistics. The top six exporters are the US, Germany, Ukraine, UK, France and Russia.
