Folklorist Virginia Hamilton tells the tale

Virginia Esther Hamilton is an award winning novelist and folklorist whose works have made a significant impact on the lives of many African Americans. She became the first African American to win the John Newbery Medal in 1974 for her novel entitled 'M.C. Higgins, The Great'. She has been honored with numerous awards including the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1992. Hamilton's book, entitled 'Her Stories: African American Fairy Tales, and True Tales,' is a compilation of several generations of unforgettable stories about African American women intended for people of all ages.

Dean Duhon-Sells overcomes much, especially her own fears
Article Abstract:
Rose M. Duhon-Sells, dean of the College of Education at Southern University, experienced poverty, racist discrimination and self-doubts in her life but overcame everything through her hard work, faith and moral support from her mother. Duhon-Sells has written books on child education and multiculturalism, and is the first African American president of the National Association of Teaching Educators.

Brothers in arms: the Million Man March
Article Abstract:
The Million Man March on Oct. 16, 1995 attended by millions of African American men is the biggest demonstration held peacefully in Washington, DC. It was the greatest demonstration of black men's solidarity. It was attended by black men who took time off from work and brought in their sons. Dignitaries and public officials delivered their messages during the Million Man March.
