Foreign futures enforcement under the 1992 U.S. Futures Trading Practices Act
Article Abstract:
The Futures Trading Practices Act of 1992 gives the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) the authority to investigate fraudulent conduct concerning domestic and foreign commodity futures. The globalization of futures markets was the impetus for this law. In conducting such investigations, the CFTC must respect foreign futures authorities' sovereignty and help institute a regulatory system for the international computerized futures market. The CFTC must also respect the rights of foreigners it investigates. This system will give investors the confidence that the growing global futures market is subject to regulatory oversight.

Greenhouse gas emissions trading and the world trading system
Article Abstract:
The relationship between the Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement for an international greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions trading scheme, and GATT/WTO has been examined. The emissions trading scheme will deal in the allocation of permits, non-compliance with emissions targets and emissions trading system enlargement. However, the study showed that emissions trading has the potential to bring member countries into conflicts with WTO provisions. Joint implementation with developing countries has been suggested to resolve the offsetting conflicts between Annex 1 and non-Annex 1 countries.

The effect of patent protection on foreign direct investment
Article Abstract:
Patent protection legislation has no direct effect on foreign investment, as shown by a study of 33 political states. Three empirical criteria were studied for a 15-year span: patent life, exclusionary and scope provisions. These results are of interest for developing countries considering ways to improve foreign direct investment. The new patent protection levels arising from the Uruguay Round of GATT have been questioned for their trade adequacy for developing countries.
