Hungary: counting the social cost of change
Article Abstract:
Hungary's transition to a democratic government and a market economy is not without social and economic costs. The social costs include the decline in the income level, inflation and unemployment. Extreme poverty is more prevalent among the very young than the elderly. These social problems have led to increases in mental illnesses such as depression. The limited social safety net still available should go to the poorest Hungarians. The money for this safety net should come from the price subsidies for some consumer goods and those for unprofitable state enterprises.
