Iran's remarkable election
Article Abstract:
The election of moderate Mohammad Khatami as Iran's president in 1997 promises to ease the country's totalitarian controls over the lives of its people. Nevertheless, Khatami has no political organization and will, therefore, need all the skill and support to make existing civil, professional and political associations stand up to the clerics' immense power. Since Iran's political setup makes the Supreme Leader, who is the head of the country's Islamic clergy, is more powerful than the president, Khatami's political ability will be severely tested.
