Kenya tries again
Article Abstract:
Kenyan Pres Daniel arap Moi stubbornly retained his presidential position even after less than one-third of the country voted for him during the Dec 1992 multiparty elections. The period following his return to power showed substantial political liberalization and modest economic progress, but not economic renewal or democratization. As a result, Moi and his ruling party, the Kenya African National Union (KANU), were plunged into a five-year stalemate against an increasingly divided opposition. This opposition refused to acknowledge Moi as the legitimate leader of the government and did not support KANU.
