Mercenaries, mines and mistakes
Article Abstract:
Mistakes made in managing Bougainville, an island off the coast of Papua New Guinea, may have contributed to the country's rapid social and economic decline. Residents of Bougainville have demanded their independence because of mismanagement at the local copper mine. The choice to hire mercenaries to fend off the Bougainville uprising resulted in political suicide for Prime Minister Sir Julius Chan. The economic impact of the closed copper mine has been felt throughout the country.

Mercenaries fill the vacuum
Article Abstract:
The failure of the international community to act in crisis areas creates a vacuum filled by mercenaries. In Sierra Leone, the role of Sandline International in the Nigerian-led struggle to reinstate the democratically elected government raises critical questions about the influence of private armies and the lack of international control over them.

To prosecute or not
Article Abstract:
The international community is unsure about whether or not it should prosecute the new leaders in Sierra Leone because of allegations of human rights violations committed by the leaders during the country's civil war. Prosecution may undermine the country's political leadership and lead to further conflict rather than reconciliation.
