Niger gets back on track

Niger's democratic experiment of 1992-96 failed and was followed by two military coups. Fair and free elections were held in 1999, but the next few years will be crucial in determining whether democracy can survive in this politically turbulent nation.

Mali's decade of democracy
Article Abstract:
Mali's democratic government was established in 1992 and has survived despite significant threats. Economic growth, continued use of global markets, and skillful leadership will be needed to preserve democratic institutions.
