Nigeria: an end to the permanent transition?
Article Abstract:
Nigerian leader General Abdulsalami Abubakar has pledged to complete the separation of the country's military from the political mainstream in May 1999, but the pledge rings hollow for many Nigerians who have heard the same promise from previous leaders. Abubakar, nonetheless, has been sending encouraging signs, including his willingness to undertake political reform and liberalization of the economy. The outcome of this process is important in the region, where Nigeria wields considerable importance.

World religions and democracy: Judaism and political life
Article Abstract:
Much of the Jewish literature is legal and thus obviously has some implications for political questions and Jewish law continues to be elaborated, first laid down in the Bible, and down to the present. Further, Jewish religious traditions remind Jews of how drastic the alternatives to democracy can be, and all humanly devised political systems are suspect.
