Petro-politics in Congo
Article Abstract:
Congo's oil industry has played a significant role in the country's political economy, specifically in its transition towards a democratic nation. The country's oil wealth has not caused regionalist tendencies as previously theorized and has led to an improved social climate and an active civic culture. However, it has also led to deep economic dependence on France and an accumulation of national debt. The country's oil revenues should be used to pay this debt, facilitate agricultural production for domestic consumption and finance local infrastructure development.

The politics of second-generation reform
Article Abstract:
Latin America is said to be on the verge of a second generation of market reforms, and the emerging viewpoint may be so compelling that there are no alternatives. However the concept is relatively vague with many different meanings and priorities thrown together under the umbrella of second generation reform. Firstly governments must tackle the effects of international shocks coming from Brazil and elsewhere and reformers must not allow likely slowdowns to postpone second generation strategies.
