The ravages of 'market bolshevism.'
Article Abstract:
Russia is undergoing a severe economic crisis at the end of the 1990s. The country may have avoided this situation if it had opted for a political solution other than the market bolshevism which has existed throughout much of the decade. The individuals in this regime believed they had the answers to the Russian problem. They declared that extreme conservatism was the problem and they refused to pay any credence to groups proposing more inclusive democratic alternatives. Features of the market bolshevist regime include an economic and psychological dependency on the West and use of propaganda to engender popular support.

Institutions and incentives
Article Abstract:
Attempts at democratic reform in Russia have been weakened by economic and political instability. The militancy in Chechnya, the lack of initiative by the law-enforcement authorities, the rise of the mafia, and government policies regarding tariffs, taxes, privatization, borrowing and subsidies have hampered the growth of liberal democracy in a big way. The government must realize that effective public policies, and not forced allegiance to the state, will motive the people to work, save or invest and thereby sustain the process of reform.

Crime without punishment
Article Abstract:
Russia's failure to uphold the supremacy of law has made the process of economic and political adjustment virtually impossible. Democratic reforms have been rendered useless by rampant crime and corruption in the political ranks. The proliferation of the mafia poses a threat not only to Russia but also to the countries of the West where it is forging alliances. In order to regain people's faith in the democratically elected government strict laws must be enforced to nab the criminals.
