The senate resolution on NATO expansion
Article Abstract:
The Senate presented on Apr 30, 1998, its resolution on the ratification of the Protocols to the North Atlantic Treaty of 1949 concerning the accession to NATO of Hungary, Poland and the Czech Republic. The resolution includes nine declarations pertaining to the reaffirmation of the significance of NATO, guidelines for consideration of future members and "conditions that are binding upon the president." The Senate approval also includes retaining the core concepts of NATO's Strategic Concept, denial of voting rights on NATO decisions to Russia and limit on the US's contribution to the NATO fund.

The debate over NATO expansion: a critique of the Clinton administration's responses to key questions
Article Abstract:
Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison and other senators addressed a letter to the Clinton administration in Jun 1997 asking questions about US policy on NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) expansion. The senators asked questions including how NATO expansion was going to strengthen stability in Europe and the US, and how NATO would address the border and ethnic disputes which traditionally occur in the nations seeking NATO membership. The responses of the Clinton administration are presented, together with a critique of the responses by experts opposed to NATO expansion.

U.S., Russia open new dialogue on strains over NATO expansion
Article Abstract:
The US government is trying to assuage Russia's fears over the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) by conducting fresh talks on the conditions of the expansion. The US seeks to bring in new member countries of the former Warsaw pact to the NATO, provided they fulfill certain economic and political conditions.
