Voices from the North Korean gulag
Article Abstract:
The repressions suffered by a number of North Korean political prisoners are beginning to be better known with successful defections of prisoners and prison guards. Allegations of human rights abuses have prompted the UN Sub-Commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities to issue a resolution addressed for North Korea to respect human rights. Excerpts from testimonies made by two former prisoners and two former prison guards from North Korea are presented.

Hart Crane's mask: T.S. Eliot
Article Abstract:
American poet Hart Crane appears to have been most strongly influenced by author T.S. Eliot and the latter's objective classicism. When Crane was in in his early 20s, he appears to have drawn heavily from Eliot in the development of his aesthetic and philosophic views, and Eliot's most profound influence on the poet was in matters of style. An evaluation of the poet's work indicates that Crane embraced Eliot's impersonal, objective and anti-romantic approach to writing.

Frail voices, not great laws
Article Abstract:
In a speech to the Swedish Academy on December 7, 2000, Chinese author Gao Xingjian discussed the importance of the individual voice in literature. He believes that when literature comes in the form of the frail, weak voice of the individual, it is much more powerful than when it is used as a tool of politics and power.
